How can we establish regional councils to enhance DSF's global representation?

Hello everyone,

I’ve started a discussion in the DSF Working Groups repository about forming “regional councils” to give more balanced global input to DSF decisions. The aim is to create groups for areas that are currently underrepresented on the DSF Board, so they can both advise on regional issues and have a voice in board discussions.

You can check out the discussion and share your ideas here:
DSF Working Groups Issue #27

The basic proposal includes:

  • Forming Regional Councils: Groups from various parts of the world that currently lack representation on the DSF Board. We need help defining what “region” should mean, as traditional corporate regional divisions (like EMEA or APAC) may be too broad, while individual countries might be too narrow.
  • Broad Membership: Anyone residing in the region would be eligible. Each council could elect its own chair or co-chair.
  • Advisory Role: Councils would provide feedback to DSF on region-specific issues and policies, acting as a two-way communication channel.
  • Board Representation: A select few from each council might attend DSF board meetings as non-voting members, offering insights while tackling potential logistical and confidentiality challenges.
  • Potential Voting and Delegation Rights: In some cases, councils might have a formal vote on decisions that directly affect their region or handle regional membership admissions, subject to board rules.

This is more of a brainstorming start than a final proposal. I’m keen to hear your feedback, concerns, and ideas, and especially to connect with global volunteers (particularly outside the US) who can help launch this initiative.
