Why can't I access the n8n API or upgrade to a non-trial plan?

Hi everyone,

I am unable to access the n8n API as described in the official documentation. Even though I am logged in using the account owner's email, the n8n API section in my account settings is inaccessible.

I suspect this issue might be related to my current plan. When attempting to upgrade, I am redirected to the general site and cannot complete the upgrade, as I do not have a billing back office for managing subscriptions towards a non-trial plan.

Can anyone help me resolve this issue?

Regards,
Julien

Below is some guidance to help you troubleshoot and resolve the issue:

Check Your Instance and Plan

  • Platform vs. Self-Hosted:
The API access and billing management options can differ depending on whether you’re using the cloud-hosted version of n8n (with a subscription) or a self-hosted (Community Edition) instance. Note that self-hosted instances come with most core features but don’t include a billing back office since there’s no subscription.

  • Plan Limitations:
If you’re on a trial account or using the Community Edition and were expecting access to an API section that appears on paid accounts, it may simply be that those features aren’t available on your current plan. Upgrading to a paid plan typically unlocks extra options like deeper API access.

Steps to Consider

  1. Confirm Your Account Type:
Double-check whether you’re logged into a cloud account or using a self-hosted instance. The cloud platform has a dedicated billing interface and account management options that may include API access not present in self-hosted setups.

  2. Review the Documentation:
Take a look at the official n8n documentation related to API access and plan features. It should outline which features are available with each plan type and offer guidance if you expect something to be available.

  3. Contact Support:
If you’re on the cloud version and still cannot locate the API section—despite being logged in as the account owner—it might be an issue with your account configuration. In that case, contacting n8n support can help clarify whether the missing API access is due to your current subscription status or another account-related issue.

Summary

  • If you’re using a self-hosted Community Edition, you won’t have a billing back office because subscriptions and plan management are only relevant for the cloud (paid) version.
  • If you’re on a cloud account but facing issues upgrading or accessing the API section, ensure you’re logged in as the account owner, and then get in touch with support for deeper troubleshooting.

These steps should help you identify what’s causing the issue and how to proceed. If you continue to have trouble, reaching out directly to n8n support is usually the fastest way to get personalized assistance.
