How can I set a custom Base URL for the OpenRouter Chat Model node in n8n?

Hi,

Thanks for adding the OpenRouter Chat Model node.

I noticed that the “Base URL” setting mentioned in the documentation is missing from both the node configuration and the OpenRouter credentials. This option would be especially useful when integrating with services like Helicone.

n8n setup details:

  • n8n version: 1.77.3
  • Running n8n via n8n cloud

Is there a supported way to configure a custom Base URL?

Below is an explanation based on the current implementation:

Current Behavior

At the moment, the OpenRouter Chat Model node does not expose a "Base URL" option. Although the documentation you referenced might indicate such an option, the node (and corresponding credentials) do not provide a field to override the default URL.

Implications for Use Cases

This means that if you need to, for example, route requests via Helicone or another proxy by customizing the API endpoint, the current node setup won’t offer a native way to do so. The underlying integration always uses the default OpenRouter API endpoint as provided by the credentials.

Recommended Next Steps

  • Feature Request: If the ability to set a custom Base URL is important for your workflow (e.g., for using Helicone), consider raising a feature request on the n8n GitHub repository.
  • Workaround: As of now, there isn’t an officially supported workaround within the node’s configuration. Some users have looked into using an additional reverse proxy or similar techniques outside n8n, but this isn’t standardized within the node itself.

I hope this clarifies the situation. Let me know if you have any more questions regarding n8n’s integrations!
