How do I enable the 'Specify Input Schema' option in n8n v1.77.3 workflows?

I am using n8n version 1.77.3, and I cannot find the 'Specify Input Schema' option when setting up my workflow tool.

I’ve spent over an hour trying to figure out where this option is or how to enable it. My current setup is as follows:

  • n8n version: 1.77.3
  • Database (default: SQLite): PostGres
  • Running n8n via Docker on Mac OS

Any guidance on how to reveal or activate this option would be appreciated.

The “Specify Input Schema” option is designed to be used only when working with agents—such as the Tools Agent or the OpenAI Functions Agent—that require a structured input schema. In n8n v1.77.3 this option will only appear when your workflow tool is set up to be used by one of these agents. If you’re not running your workflow through an agent that supports structured inputs, the option will not be visible.

To enable it you need to:

  • Configure your workflow tool to be used with a Tools Agent or OpenAI Functions Agent.
  • Ensure that you have checked any settings that activate agent support and structured schema input.

If you’re not using an agent, the “Specify Input Schema” option won’t open, which is the expected behavior.
