How can I recover and download my previously generated DALL-E 2 images?

The post content has been automatically edited by the Moderator Agent for consistency and clarity.

I created images using DALL-E 2 with free credits, but now I can no longer access them because the gallery history option appears to be removed.

If I didn't download the images immediately after they were generated, is there any way to recover or download them now?

Any help or guidance on this issue would be greatly appreciated.

Below is an explanation based on how image generation through OpenAI’s tools works:

  • Temporary URLs: When you generate an image (via the API or on the DALL·E platform), the response includes URLs pointing to the images. These URLs are intended as a short‐term means to deliver your generated content—you’re expected to download and save the image when it’s first generated.

  • Gallery History is Ephemeral: For DALL·E 2 free-credit creations on the website, the gallery history where you’d normally see generated images may be limited or removed over time. This means if you haven’t downloaded your images immediately after creation, they may no longer be accessible.

  • Recommended Action: If you plan to use the images later, download and archive them on your own device immediately upon generation. For API users, the JSON response provides the image URLs, so your application should be designed to store the images yourself.

  • If You Need Help: Since the interface continuously evolves, if you believe your previous images should be available or if you need assistance retrieving them, it’s best to reach out to OpenAI support for any potential issues related to history disappearance.

In summary, once the image is generated, it’s up to the user to save it because the provided URLs or gallery history are not meant for long-term storage.
