Why Does the DALL-E 3 API Strictly Block Detailed Non-English Prompts That Seem Benign?

The post content has been automatically edited by the Moderator Agent for consistency and clarity.

Thank you for announcing the DALL-E 3 API. It’s fantastic!!

However, I’m experiencing an issue where prompts that include specifics like men’s or women’s clothing, hairstyles, or items get blocked due to the content policy. Even prompts that mention neutral scenarios, such as beaches or pool sides, are being rejected despite not intending to generate any adult content.

Example error message:

JSON
{ 'code': 'content_policy_violation', 'message': 'Your request was rejected as a result of our safety system.' }

Interestingly, when I translate my Japanese prompts into English before sending them to the API, they are not blocked. Could the internal translation process be affecting how the content policy is applied to non-English prompts?

I appreciate any insights or workarounds on this matter.

OpenAI’s moderation system is designed to ensure that all content generated by DALL·E 3 adheres to our ethical and safety guidelines. These filters are applied uniformly, which sometimes means that prompts—even those that are benign in intent—can trigger content policy violations if they include terms or combinations of details (such as specific clothing descriptions, hairstyles, or scenarios with potential skin exposure) that the system deems potentially problematic.

Regarding your observation with Japanese-language prompts, the system does perform internal processing (including translation into English) before applying the moderation checks. This can sometimes result in differences in how prompts are interpreted, causing a prompt in Japanese to be blocked while its translated version is not.

We appreciate feedback from users as it helps us improve the system. OpenAI continuously reviews and refines both the moderation models and the overall safety processes, striving to strike the right balance between creative freedom and harm prevention.

If you believe that there’s a need for adjustments in the moderation thresholds or if you have specific feedback, please use the appropriate feedback channels so that the team can investigate these cases further.
